Six previously published papers on the life and work of William Carey and his illustrious coworkers are revised and presented here along with two new papers, including a major study on the evangelistic work of the Serampore mission team. This is not an expose of Carey, but the study does expose shallow scholarship and romantic renditions of the Carey story. The struggles and failures of the famous Trio are not ignored, and the roles of Marshman and Ward are highlighted in relation to Carey. The clear failure of the evangelistic effort of Serampore is not only shown; various implications of that failure are indicated. Yet Carey remains a heroic figure, and one of the most influential figures in the history of Christian missions.
